What is OPL?

The Ontario Premier League (OPL) Program is the top pro-am soccer competition in the province of Ontario, Canada. It was originally launched in 2014 as League1 Ontario, created to bridge the gap between elite youth soccer and higher amateur or professional levels by providing high-performance competition for clubs and players. The OPL includes multiple divisions (OPL 1, 2, and 3) with promotion and relegation and a U-20 league.

A Platform for Development

As a vital stepping stone in the Canadian soccer landscape, OPL focuses on showcasing and developing emerging Canadian talent. The league also provides a critical platform for the growth of up-and-coming coaches and match officials, fostering development across all aspects of the sport.

Governance and Partnerships

Owned and managed by Canadian Soccer Media and Entertainment, OPL operates under the sanctioning of FIFA through Canada Soccer and Ontario Soccer. The league now runs as part of Premier Soccer Leagues Canada, further solidifying its role in the broader development of soccer in the country.

OPL League Structure

The Ontario Premier League operates a three-tier men’s and women’s structure under the national banner of Premier Soccer Leagues Canada. OPL 1 is the top division, with promotion and relegation connecting it to OPL 2, while OPL 3 runs regionally with opportunities for advancement. A U20 division and League Cup competition further support player development and competitive depth across the province.
